The performance
“Antigone” premiered at the GSTT in April 2017. Direction, set design and costume
design are by Bernhard M. Eusterschulte.
Live sound design is by Roderik Vanderstraeten, and Jürgen
Popig as playwright. The cast features GSTT actresses Oana Vidoni, Olga Török and Dana
Borteanu, joined on stage by actors from Germany and Luxemburg, Nickel Bösenberg, Pascale Noe Adam, Steffen
Gangloff and Germain Wagner.
Sophocles’ “Antigone” is one of the best known themes
of ancient theatre; it was taken and molded
by Bertolt Brecht in 1948, in Switzerland,
short after his return from the United
States, after the translation by Friedrich
Hölderlin. In Brecht’s adaptation, man is no longer subject to a higher power,
an implacable destiny. On the contrary, the perspectives of determining ones
own fate is available. For man, guided by interests, is the one able to
determine history.
On the occasion of this co-production, the director of
the Theatre in Heidelberg,
Holger Schultze, had this to say: “An international co-production such as this
is especially important and precious in a time where European values are
doubted from different parts. This is why I am glad to stage Sophocles’
Antigone by Bertolt Brecht, a true plea for civic courage and against resigning
in the face of faith. In this performance, we have actors from Germany, Luxemburg and Romania, that
will meet with very different audiences in their respective countries. To me,
this is a clear sign against resentment and populism.”
The performance was presented during the
Ruhrfestspiele Festival in Recklinghausen (Germany) in
June 2017.
