The performance “Antigone” by Bertolt Brecht, directed by Bernhard M. Eusterschulte, a coproduction of the German State Theatre Timisoara (GSTT) and the National Theatre Luxemburg, Heidelberg Theatre, Ruhrfestspiele Recklinghausen and TARTproduktion Stuttgart, will have two representations at the Ruhrfestspiele in Recklinghausen (Germany)
Saturday, 17th of June 2017, at 17 o’clock and
Sunday, the 18th of June 2017, at 18 o’clock.
Bernhard M. Eusterschulte was in charge of directing, set design and costume design for the “Antigone” performance. The live sound-design is by Roderik Vanderstraeten, and Jürgen Popig as playwright. The cast features GSTT actresses Oana Vidoni, Olga Török and Dana Borteanu, who are joined on stage by the actors from Germany and Luxemburg Nickel Bösenberg, Pascale Noe Adam, Steffen Gangloff and Germain Wagner.
On the occasion of this coproduction, the GSTT manager Lucian M. Vărșăndan declared: “International cooperation projects such as this are very important to theatre, even vital, for they create impulses and stimulate creativity. Theatre lives, probably the most among all forms of art, from the power of encounters and idea exchanges, from the imminent confrontation of creators, and when these come from different countries, and if the result of their creation is presented to the audience of as many countries, the result is most certain an enriching one.”
This antique literary motive is taken up by Bertolt Brecht in 1948 shortly after returning from the United States, in Switzerland, based on the translation of Friedrich Hölderlin. Brecht’s intention was that, based on writing, he could demonstrate the validity of his theatrical theory and its comprehension of history. For Brecht, Antigone represents the sole play amongst the antique tragedies that "wasn’t completely suffocated by the inexplicable fatality of a mystical destiny”.
